Save America's Treasures

About the Collection

The Early American Schoolbook Collection housed in Special Collections is a collection of over 3,000 nineteenth-century textbooks and Sunday school books. Created for, and read by, generations of young American students over 100 years ago, the schoolbooks are filled with ideas, beliefs, and subject matter that can continue to teach us today. Once numbering in the millions, these books are now scarce and often in poor condition due to the heavy use over the years. Thanks to a grant from the Save America’s Treasures program, the MSU Libraries is providing conservation treatment for many of our schoolbooks to ensure their scholarly use for generations to come.
