The hanging of four of the conspirators
Photo of the July 7, 1865, hanging of four Lincoln conspirators (Mary Surratt, Lewis Payne, David E. Herold, and George A. Atzerodt). The trapdoor has dropped and their hooded bodies are suspended. The newspaper caption attributes the photo to a "Col. B.P. Nicklin, but it was actually taken by Alexander Gardner. Part of the Old Arsenal Penitentiary's cell block and wall are visible in the background.
